Frequently Asked Questions
Psilocybin is a naturally occurring psychedelic compound found in certain species of mushrooms. When consumed, the body converts psilocybin into psilocin, which interacts with serotonin receptors in the brain. This can lead to altered states of consciousness, enhanced introspection, emotional processing, and, for some, profound spiritual experiences. Psilocybin has been used for centuries in various cultures for healing and personal growth.
Psilocybin has a low toxicity profile and is generally considered physically safe when used with the right preparation and support. It’s not known to be addictive, and research suggests it carries a lower risk of physical harm than many other substances. That said, the experience can be emotionally deep and sometimes challenging, so careful screening and a supportive environment are important to help ensure it’s the right fit for each person.
Psilocybin is not known to be physically addictive, and it doesn’t create the compulsive use patterns seen with many other substances. Most people don’t feel drawn to take it repeatedly, especially because the experience tends to be deep and reflective rather than habit forming. Some research has explored psilocybin’s potential role in helping people shift certain behaviors, but psilocybin itself does not cause physical dependence.
Psilocybin interacts with serotonin receptors in the brain, particularly the 5-HT2A receptor. This interaction temporarily changes how different brain networks communicate with one another. One of these changes involves reduced activity in the brain’s Default Mode Network, which plays a role in self-focused thinking and habitual mental patterns. When this network becomes less dominant, people often experience more flexibility in how they think and perceive their inner world, sometimes describing a feeling of being less “stuck.”
These shifts can create space for emotional processing and new ways of relating to thoughts and experiences. Some people also notice a sense of connection that feels different from everyday awareness. While everyone’s experience is unique, psilocybin can create brain conditions that support insight and deeper inner exploration.
People often describe experiences such as:
Seeing familiar thoughts or patterns from a new perspective
Feeling more emotionally open or connected
Gaining clarity around difficult emotions
Noticing a quieter or less rigid inner dialogue
Experiencing past events from a different angle
Feeling more present or compassionate toward themselves
*Experiences vary from person to person.
The number of psilocybin sessions someone may choose varies from person to person and depends on their intentions, personal history, and how deeply they want to explore the experience. Some people feel that a single session offers meaningful insight, while others choose additional sessions to continue their inner work over time. A lot depends on how the experience is integrated afterward and whether someone feels that they are ready to explore more content.
People often consider things like:
Their goals; whether they’re seeking clarity, emotional exploration, or personal growth
The depth of the material they’re working with; some people prefer more spacious, ongoing work
Their integration process; one well-integrated session may feel complete for some, while others appreciate continued support
*Everyone’s path is different, and there is no “right” number of sessions.
Psilocybin is currently being studied in clinical and academic settings for its potential role in supporting people experiencing depression, anxiety, obsessive-compulsive patterns, trauma-related distress, addiction, end-of-life concerns, grief, and other emotional or existential challenges. Research in this area is ongoing, and individual responses vary.
In Colorado’s regulated model, psilocybin is not prescribed as a treatment for a specific diagnosis. When psilocybin-assisted therapy is provided by a licensed clinician, it may be thoughtfully integrated into behavioral health care, with the focus guided by clinical judgment and the goals of the client. Rather than aiming to “treat” a condition, this work supports insight and emotional processing, and can shift how someone relates to their inner experience and life history.
*Experiences vary widely, and psilocybin is not a replacement for professional medical or mental health care.
Psilocybin therapy may be beneficial if you are seeking deep personal healing, struggling with mental health challenges, or feeling stuck in life. However, it is not for everyone. People with a history of schizophrenia, psychosis, or certain heart conditions may not be suitable candidates. A consultation with a licensed facilitator can help determine if psilocybin therapy aligns with your needs and goals.
A psilocybin-assisted session typically includes:
Preparation – Before your session, you will have a consultation to discuss your intentions, medical history, and any concerns. You will then participate in a formal preparation session. Your facilitator will help you prepare mentally and emotionally for the experience.
The Session – On the day of the session, you will come to our office and get settled into your therapy room. You'll review your intentions with your licensed facilitator and process any feelings you are having. After consuming psilocybin, you will be supported through the experience, which may include deep introspection, emotional release, and altered perception.
Integration – After the session, you will meet with your facilitator to process and integrate your experience. This helps translate insights into meaningful, lasting change in your life.
A psilocybin administration session can last anywhere from 5 to eight hours and includes continuous support from one of our licensed facilitators. Preparation and integration sessions occur before and after the dosing day.

Our pricing varies based on the facilitator and the specific services requested. Please note that the cost of operating in this field is substantial and expected to continue rising in the coming years. A single round of services typically involves 10–12 hours of direct client care by our clinicians which is roughly equivalent to three months of traditional talk therapy. That said, we are committed to making these services as accessible as possible. Please reach out to discuss pricing options and explore what might work for you.
Unfortunately, psilocybin-assisted therapy is not currently a covered service under major health insurances. Therefore, the psilocybin-assisted services-which include a preparatory session, psilocybin session and integration session-must be paid for out of pocket. If you would like to have additional talk therapy, preparatory or integration sessions we may be able to utilize your insurance. Contact us for more details!
